| The Story of the Day: 3 Hole in Ones! |
This must set some kind of record... our inaugural Senior 4-Man Scramble with a total field of 88 players resulted in three aces! We're not sure if this has ever even happened during a Champions Tour event but it was pretty exciting on a gorgeous August day here at Liberty Hills. These (50 and older) guys can play! The neighbors must have wondered just what kind of event we were having with all hootin' and hollerin' going on out there.
The first report came in that Gary Fosnaugh aced the par 3, 150 yard seventh. A little while later, news made it to the clubhouse that 75-year old Tom Algren made the most of the super senior gold tee advantage (still 156 yards) and knocked it in on the ninth. Then on his team's final hole of play due to the shot-gun start, Dan Whittington holed out on lucky number thirteen at 119 yards.
Little did he know, that his team stood in a four-way tie at 12- under par at the time. Thanks to Dan's ace, his team moved to 14-under to win the scramble format tournament by two shots. What Dan did know was that his teammate Chris Conley had just upped their friendly wager for "closest to the pin on the par three's" to "double or nothing." Chris was probably feeling pretty good when he hit his own shot to six feet, and even better after his teammate holed out. Dan must do pretty well at that game, as it was his fourth career hole in one.
The dozen or so Sidney Swingers that came over from Shelby Oaks Golf Course were thrilled for Gary Fosnaugh's luck in scoring his first hole in one. It means he'll be buying the doughnuts for about 70 of his closest friends before their Monday morning golf league next week.
After the first three players on his team completely missed the green, they tried to shame Tom Algren into hitting his ball onto the ninth. It must not have bothered him, the 75 year-old came through with his first hole in one. It was so much fun that he's hoping to live long enough to have another.
